Why plastic and not glass?

Short answer: raw aloe expands 30% when frozen, which often cracks glass. Our BPA-free HDPE bottles are non-leaching and properly cured prior to use.

Our History with Glass

We originally tried glass; however, aloe expands much more than water and despite various methods the glass your crack or break when frozen or when our customer re-froze. Plus, many were not willing to pay the extra money for the cost of glass. So, we needed to find the next best thing, and BPA-free HDPE both non-toxic and economical.

Our BPA-free HDPE Choice

We package our raw aloe in BPA-free HDPE plastic containers, which cure for 3 months before use and are never heated. HDPE is a strong, thick plastic designed to hold hazardous chemicals. It is resistant to breaking down, making it a non-leaching plastic. Raw aloe does not contain any acidic substances that could break down plastic, it is bottled at room temperature, and we freeze our aloe instead of heating it. We do not add any chemicals or preservatives. BPA-free HDPE is a better option compared to other plastics and is also more affordable than glass for those on a tighter budget.

I agree that cheaper and lower-quality plastics can leach harmful substances. This issue mainly arises from their manufacturing process and the lack of proper curing time. Water bottles are a well-known example of this problem. Often, water is poured into these bottles just minutes after they are made, and then sealed immediately. This leaves no time for the materials to cure, off-gas, or breathe. Additionally, these bottles are typically thin, flimsy, and not durable. Here is a short video describing this process. We are careful and thorough with our BPA-free HDPE bottles and follow none of these practices.

What to do with the plastic?

We encourage you to recycle or reuse your BPA-free HDPE bottles. For example, many people buy small bottles and half-gallon containers. They refill the smaller bottles with the liquid from the half-gallon containers. Others use these bottles as watering pitchers for their plants, for growing seedlings, or for kids’ crafts. Feel free to get creative!
